I'm trying to find the title for the reference book that researches the meanings and origins of common sayings? I've found plenty on famous quotes,
but I want to know where "an apple a day keeps the doctor away," and "starve a cold, feed a fever," etc., come from?? Any ideas??

Hey, you don't have to GO to the library! You can just call them! There's always a specific number for "Reference" at your public library.
Check out their web site. Yes, they have one.
Or you can get lucky and hope one of your online friends is a librarian. It's your lucky day! You could use The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase, Saying, and Quotation. It's on the second issue and there's some overlap, but the first has traditional sayings and the second has some pop culture sayings. There are others, of course, but for hard copy I always reach for Oxford press first. |
