I'm not enough of a trekkie to know if that was the case in the original series or not. For some reason, I always thought that Uhura and Kirk had a thing going. I don't even recall Uhura and Kirk being an item as well. I have to say I like the new Spock a bit more than the old Spock. SPOILER New Spock showing a bit of emotion and his feelings towards Uhura were great. The man loved his mamma. I didn't see Uhura and Spock as "an item" ...she seemed to be comforting him in the elevator, not seducing him. Maybe it was just to show Uhura's love for Spock, that she was interested in having a relationship with him, and that if the Vulcan was willing and able she'd be there. I guess they had both "moved on..." I think that "young" Spock being more emotional was natural. He was still a young man, grappling with his twin identities. As he got older, he tended more toward the Vulcan side but it was always a struggle for him. That was conveyed beautifully, and it made me appreciate the more mature Spock even more. There's comfort, and then there's having the hots for someone, and to me the latter is what Uhura seemed to have going on. I thought Spock did kiss her back, but even if he didn't, it looked like there was some expression on his part, at the very least 'hmm, what is going on here?' If I had to critique one part of the movie, it would actually be Uhura - she just didn't do it for me. I picked out Winona right away because of her voice - she sounds the same in everything I've seen her in.

It happened just before Spock and Kirk were about to beam down to Nero's ship. They were kissing and Kirk was watching with this, "Huh?" look on his face. At any rate, I checked with my friend who is a Trekkie and he said that they never had a "thing" in the original series, but that Uhura and Kirk had a "moment" when they were under the influence of some alien mind-control. In that episode, Kirk and Uhura kissed and it was the first interracial kiss ever shown on television. Yes...my friend is a geek. Fiddle

Star Trek Writers Reveal Most Controversial Script Decisions - Uhura/Spock Romance By Tambay, on May 14th, 2009 If you haven't seen the film yet, this will obviously be a spoiler… although I don't think it's a major one. Star Trek writers/producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, recently spoke to MTV, revealing what they described as their "two gutsiest choices while writing the script." The first was the destruction of Vulcan - no surprise there. The second was the romance between Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and Spock (Zachary Quinto). Read all about it below… "Obviously, very tricky was the relationship between Spock and Uhura," he (Orci) explained of the surprising romance, which was never even remotely hinted at in the original series. "I think everybody knows that the first interracial kiss [on TV] was between Kirk and Uhura on the original series, but there was never a relationship between the two of them." Discussing the reasoning behind the romantic subplot, Orci explained: "It was a decision that was made largely because Spock had just suffered the death of his planet, and you felt for him so dramatically, and in a moment like that the person he would talk to - in his own Spock way - would have been Kirk, except him and Kirk weren't friends at that point." "So, it felt like there was an organic way to make Uhura his secret confidante," Orci continued. "What happens in that scene is that you are paying tribute to a variant of what happened in the original series, and want Spock to have a hug in that scene. And because he can't express emotion - well, he can but he chooses not to - we felt like [Uhura kissing Spock was] a really good way to allow the audience to do that for him." Interesting choice. It did take me by surprise when it was unveiled, as I watched the movie, especially since it was not at all hinted at in any of the trailers, and wasn't at all a sub-plot in the original TV series - not that I recall, anyway. The person I saw the film with, and myself, simultaneously leaned into each other and asked the same question - was that storyline in the original series? It took me a minute to adjust to it, and it did feel a little stilted - but it may have been meant to feel that way, given the moments, and the characters - specifically Spock and his "logical/illogical" way of reasoning. It's never too late to have a happy childhood...

It may not have been a full-blown romance, but it makes their history more interesting. Your Signature ... I took that to mean that Spock and Kirk's animosity (as opposed to their friendship on the TV show) and Spock and Uhura's love relationship (as opposed to being mere shipmates as on the TV show) are "new realities" that will continue in future films.
