This is just breaking at Politico...nobody else has corroborated it yet but they're reporting it live on MSNBC.

Also Breaking - MSNBC is now reporting she is going to be stepping down in a month and not even completing the term she is in, handing over the governorship to the lieutenant governor who will be sworn in at month's end.

Gov. Sarah Palin has told associates that she will not seek re-election next year, freeing her to pursue a White House bid in 2012, according to two GOP sources.

Palin is to make her decision known later this afternoon from her home in

Wasilla with her husband, Todd, and family by her side.
By not running for re-election, Palin liberates herself from the political constraints that come with running for president while still in elected office.

Leaving office at the end of next year, the former vice presidential hopeful will be able to travel the country more freely without facing the sort of repeated ethics inquiries she's been fending off since returning to Alaska earlier this year.

WASILLA, Alaska -- Gov. Sarah Palin will resign her office in a few weeks, she said during a news conference at her home Friday morning.

Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated at the Governor's Picnic at the end of the month.

There was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Fat chance of that desi...this is a media whore of unprecedented levels, IMO. Her entire conduct during the Letterman "feud" cemented that for me, that this woman will do whatever it takes to stay in the public spotlight.

I gotta say though - to not even finish the term that the people of Alaska elected you to? She's a quitter. And if - IF - she's stepping down NOW in order to focus completely on a 2012 campaign, it's even sicker.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

Palin, a Republican, was elected governor in 2006. She was tapped as Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year.

Palin said she was transferring authority to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the Governor's Picnic on July 25.

A Republican source close to her political team told CNN's John King that it was a "calculation" she made that "it was time to move on." The governor's "book deal and other issues" were "causing a lot of friction" in her home state, the source said, adding that he believes she is "mapping out a path to 2012."

As the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin has been considered one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination in 2012. Her decision not to seek another term as governor is sure to stoke speculation that Palin is seriously eyeing a run for the White House.

In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about her re-election bid because she needed to focus on her state and her family.

"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.

"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.

Palin catapulted on the national stage last August when McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, chose her as his running mate.

Proof positive that she cares a great deal more about her own personal political ambitions that she does for the residents of Alaska. Of course, it could be argued that by stepping down, she's doing them a favor.

Maybe she did it on July 3rd, Canada's version of our 4th of July, because she can see Canada from her backyard.

And if Sarah should decide to run for President of the World before her term as President of the U.S. is over, will she just up and quit us?

Sorry 8 - our national birthday was Wednesday. July 1.

I hope she does run, and I hope the Huckabees and the Romneys and the rest of the candidates rake her sorry ass over the coals for not finishing her present term. It's one thing not to run again, that's fine and everybody expected that - but to walk away in the middle of a term?? Makes her look like a bigger lame duck than actually running again and then quitting to be embarassed again on the national stage.

If anyone didn't suspect she was an overambitious idiot before, let there be no doubt now.

Resignation is certainly out of character for Sarah Palin. Senator Mark Begich had a meeting with Sarah Palin two days ago with no mention of her leaving office. Palin's press secretary, David Murrow had posted on his Facebook page Wednesday, "David Murrow is considering life's ironies." He was hired less than a month ago. Several pundits and media outlets are now speculating that something is either about to shake loose, or something already has and just hasn't hit the fan yet. Considering the release in the last couple of days of the tete-a-tete emails with the McCain campaign people, one is left to wonder if Steve Schmidt isn't holding some kind of bombshell...or if we're on the eve of yet another gubernatorial ethics scandal.

Her rambling and practically inchoherent resignation speech didn't exactly clear anything up either. Methinks this was a far more hasty decision to end her present term than she has let on.

I'm highly amused by the pundits trying to spin this move as "brilliant". You don't make an announcement like this on the Friday before a holiday weekend unless you want it to not get press coverage. One of the articles I read said that she may be leaving politics for good. Nothing would make me happier, but I have my doubts.

IMO, the only thing brilliant about this is that she might go away for a while. I have my doubts but one can dream, right?

The local Alaskan press are for the most part smelling something fishy so far too, and the digging has begun...I see this as a Friday news dump and perhaps her advisors were hoping for low key coverage, however I don't think it's going to be left alone over the weekend. Not by a long shot.

The immediate outcome of her announcement today is that the media spotlight will switch to Palin from the incessant Michael Jackson coverage. (hallelujah) The potential opportunity to air some prime dirty laundry regarding a living politician trumps a deceased pop star. (At least for the time being.)
