It's not about what's best for the planet or country...it's about keeping women from having control over whether they choose to be breeding machines all the time. I'm sick of fundamentalist, middle aged men trying to tell me and other women what control we can and can't have over our own bodies.
BINGO!
The personal responsibility argument is a way to make some aspects of the conservative movement more palatable to the average voter. With respect to women's issues, it's really in the name of preventing women from breaking out of forced gender role. Back in the day, conservative men freaked out when women finally had access to the pill. Remember, it took several decades for the pill to finally make it to market. There was actually an effort to stop it. Unfortunately for these people, they are rare and people who call themselves conservatives are figuring out this modern conservative movement and want nothing of it. It's good to see.
Edited to say: Yeah Jules, some women are less supportive and more rightwing than men. However, they're still following what the men say. They're
just meaner about it because they don't want to see women getting what they miss out on. Also, to believe and follow something that takes away your own
freedom results in much more rationalization and kool-aid drinking. It's interesting how many women are the big force behind fundamentalist religions even
though the whole system is designed to benefit men to a greater extent.

Sorry, Heat. Didn't mean to give ya a visual.
