I've never seen Karl Urban in anything but LOTR and I didn't remember him at all from that series...he sort of blended in with the rest of them, you know? So, for me, he was a fresh delight and just amazing as Bones. I can't say that, enough times, just because I was such an entrenched Trekker.

i haven't read the whole thread, but i just had to chime in with my agreement on how good this movie is. i can't wait to see it a coupla more times. everybody in it is hot! definitely including karl urban, who i was totally, totally shocked to see was bones. i didn't even realize it till i read up on it afterwards. gawd, what a jump from lotr!

i loved it! can't wait for the sequel!

I really didn't think about the other movies as I was watching it, either; just appreciated on how well the new young cast nailed such well established characters in their youth.
The time travel angle didn't bother me either. It was science fiction!

I don't understand what there is to NOT understand about all the time travel. I just watched the movie once and accepted it as it was presented, without referring to the TV show or the other movies. Easy peasy japaneasy.

I just saw the movie again, and I loved it even more. It was positively heart-warming, watching those iconic characters in their youth as they gradually joined together as a crew and began working as a unit. I can't believe how such a nearly impossible task turned into such a perfect cast. I loved them all, including Scotty's little friend!! I hope we see more of It.
This time, I had a lump in my throat in that final scene between Spock and Spock. I may be overstating...

Me, too. In the series, Kirk nearly always got the girl. In retrospect, Spock was far more attractive!!

Right, and the building of that friendship and trust will occur over time and from shared experiences... and is the stuff of future ST movie plots, no doubt.

Correct me if wrong, but given that time travel altered the course of history in the film, and thus altered Spock's and Kirk's personal histories as we knew them from the original TV series, doesn't it follow that these same alterations will carrry forward into any future sequel Star Trek films? I think the original question here, was whether Spock/Uhura were ever an item, in tos or in the films, which they were not; Kirk/Uhura had that one, brief, moment in the episode of the tos some have already cited; I thought it was perfect that Spock/Uhura, had a "thang" when the crew was just starting to form. It may not have been a full-blown romance, but it makes their history more interesting.

I'm in the minority prolly, but I didn't care for the romance angle at all. There's comfort, and then there's having the hots for someone, and to me the latter is what Uhura seemed to have going on. I thought Spock did kiss her back, but even if he didn't, it looked like there was some expression on his part, at the very least 'hmm, what is going on here?'
